Finding Your Dream Job in a Challenging Job Market as a Fresh Graduate

It’s always been tough to find the right career path, but these days it feels even harder. Trends are changing faster & new skills are needed faster than people can learn them, making it confusing where to focus your efforts. Schools try to give kids a well-rounded education by teaching many subjects, but the skills learnt in school may not be always transferable to the real world.:

1. Resume

These days, computers often scan resumes before humans even see them. So, if you would like your resume to be picked up by the machine, you need to tell the machine that your profile is relevant. And machine learns about relevancy through ‘keywords. So, make sure every time you are applying for a job, you have the right keywords (picked up from job description) on the resume so that it gets selected for a second review by HR.

2. The Art of the Modern Cold Call

In the current climate, companies are looking for smart, skilled people with the right attitude, but also at a reasonable cost. Focus on what you bring to the table! Don’t hesitate to reach out to business owners highlighting your skills and how you can contribute. Call them on their office landlines or drop them an email with an introduction. 99.9% of the emails or calls won’t be answered & don’t get disheartened. That’s the norm. Continue to make an effort till you find someone who responds to your email/call. Everyone loves a driven person who is willing to learn and work hard.

3. Internships,Your Launchpad

If you dream of working in big firms then be open to write to them that you are ready to work as interns. Internships are a great way to gain experience and build relationships within an organization. You can showcase your skills and commitment, and even if the internship doesn’t turn into a full-time job, the connections you make could lead to future opportunities.

4. Network Smarter, Not Harder

Networking isn’t just about handing out business cards at events or quick introductions on the go. While you’re still in college, take advantage of guest speakers and workshops to talk with industry professionals. Another smart strategy? Try reaching out to company leaders through professional networking sites for an informal coffee chat. Even if most decline, the effort shows initiative and could lead to a valuable connection.

5. Be prepared & confident

You are still young in the job market so in terms of experience and knowledge, there isn’t much expectation from you. However, if you land an interview, do some research beforehand! This shows you’re interested and eager to learn. Confidence is key! Even if you’re not an expert yet, showcase your willingness and enthusiasm to learn and grow.

Remember, the two things that will truly set you apart are a positive attitude and resilience. Stay focused, keep learning, and don’t give up on your dream job!
